Its World Breastfeeding Week 2022! So whats the big Deal?
Baby's Gut Flora is colonized by traveling through mama's birth canal during a vaginal delivery.. Colostrum and breastmilk contain exactly what that good bacteria NEED; Food for baby and food for baby's gut flora
Breastmilk is the best option because it is nature's way, it is a human infants PROPER diet
Babie's saliva communicates w/ the mother's millk and the content of the milk actually changes based on baby's age, and what baby needs at that time.
Breastfeeding releases hormones such as oxytocin (the love hormone) which aids in bonding between mom and baby leading to less PPD and better attachment.
Breastfeeding helps the uterus shrink right after birth and may also lead to lower risk of developing breast cancer for the mother.
Its SUPER easy not having to pack bottles, water, formula, etc every time you leave the house. Baby can feed on demand straight from the source without any extra baggage.
Studies show adults who were breastfed as babies are HEALTHIER then those who were not.
My advice if you are pregnant is to learn about breastfeeding and any potential challenges you might face BEFORE you have your baby. Hire a doula so you can improve your chances of a vaginal birth, and she can assist you in those first few days. She can also put you in touch with lactation consultants in your area who can assist you if you are having trouble or need extra support. Find a pedatrician who is supportive of exclusive breastfeeding. Align yourself with a online (or in person) support group of other moms or friends you can talk to. Set small goals. Its okay not to breastfeed for two years, or even 1 year. If you were able to feed your baby colostrum (the liquid gold generally on days 1-3) celebrate that! If you make it to 1 week, feel proud of yourself. The first month is the hardest (IMHO) and it gets so much easier after that. If you switch to formula for personal or health reasons - don't beat yourself up. There are organic formula options that you can feel good about too.
